Devika was sitting in her room with her laptop. Her fingers were typing fastly as she made a goal to complete half a chapter in one hour, but suddenly her mind became blank as the door opened.
She saved her documents and removed the page, and opened her lecture. Sumita, her mother entered the room with her old saree.
“Devika, wear it fastly,” she placed the ironed saree on the bed “And helped me in preparing breakfast.”
Devika looked at her mother in confusion, “Is there any wedding?” She asked her mother.
Sumita stopped her moments and looked at her daughter, she shook her head “No, there are some important guests coming. So do it fast and tidy the place fast.”
“But mummy,” Before she could complete her sentence her mother left the room. “Why should I wear this saree? Ugh if i don't wear it mummy will get angry,” she cleaned her room and washed her face.
After some time, she was standing in front of the mirror, the saree is in pink colour. It's comfortable and light weighted, not heavy or elegant.
She traced the simple golden border. And set the pallu free and tied her hair in a bun. “Didi, why did you wear a saree?,” Yashvi, her younger sister asked as she entered in a plain yellow anarkali suit. Her long hair is tied in a braid, she is always beautiful unlike me she thought.
“Mummy told me to wear it!” she replied and wore a simple bracelet so her hands didn't look empty. “Kyun aapke rishte waale aa rahe hain,” Devika rolled her eyes and threw a comb in her direction.
“Main tumhe bahut marungi Yashvi, pagal ladki,” she giggled while fixing her face. Devika glanced at myself for seconds and went out of the room to help mummy.
“Pata nahin kaun aa raha hain, aaye toh aaye mujhe kyun saree pahane ko bola,” she whispered to herself and collided with the couch.
“Oww my knee,” she sat on the head of the couch and rubbed her knee to erase the sudden pain.
“Devika idhar aa,” her mother called her from the kitchen. She stood up and slowly went to the kitchen, and looked at her mother who was making the puri.
“Wow mummy kya khusbhoo hain. Main plate nikalu khane ke liye?” She asked her mother, already drooling over the puri and halwa.
“No it's not for you, it's for the guests. If anything will be left then you can eat it,” she scolded her and handed her small cloth “Now wiped these plates and put them on the dining table and don't you dare to break any of them,” she showed her angry eyes to Devika, and she quietly move towards the dinning table.
“Jab dekho yeh karo, woh karo agar mujhe bhook lagi hain toh bhi mehmano ke baad khao. Aur agar woh log sab kuch kha gaye toh?” She mumbled to herself and wiped all the plates.
Her sister also helped in cleaning and putting the dishes on the table. Then the door bell rang, her sister went to open the door and welcomed the guest with nervousness.
She took small steps then rushed to her sister “Didi, chaar log hain or mummy, papa, main aur tum toh total 8 log hain chai bana do,” she counted on her fingers and took out the tea cups.
“Why do you have mehendi (henna) on your hands?” Devika exclaimed, and set sweets in the bowl. “But didi, I cannot measure the sugar properly,” she excused and pouted her lips.
“Kamchor,” Devika whispered and put the utensil on the gas for tea. After boiling it she poured the tea in the cups and swiped the tray towards her sister.
Yashvi widened her eyes, as if someone put a gun to her head. “Didi, hume sharam aati hain. Hum nahin jayenge yeh tray lekar aap jaiye, aap badi hain,” Devika slapped on her back and shook her head.
“No it's not how the deal works according to the law, I made the tea now you have to serve it,” she put her hands on her waist and answered.
“I am not going!” Yashvi exclaimed. “YEH KYA BAAT-” before Devika could complete her sentence her mother entered and stopped her.
“Don't you both have some manners? The guests are in your house and you both are fighting like cat and dog and both of you come out with me,” she grabbed the tray and glared at both of them.
They both followed her and together on one couch, “She is my elder daughter, Devika and she is Yashvi, our younger daughter.
Devika looked up and joined her hands to greet them “Namaste.”
The elders nodded their heads and whispered to each other, Devika looked at the man with a confused gaze.
“He is our son Rudransh,” her parents smiled, but they all flinched when her sister yelled “Ohh aap toh CM hona joh abhi election me jeete the. Aapke logo ne kaju kalti bhi distribute ki thi,” His parents laughed at her statement and Devika pulled her hand to keep her quiet.
“Ji, hum wahi CM hain,” he chuckled. “Let's eat lunch,” Her mother asked them to sit at the dining table.
They all moved towards the table, Devika took the bowl and started serving them. Then she stands behind her mother “Aap bhi khaiye,” Rudransh calls out to her.
She looked at her mother then at him and sat on the chair beside his mother, he looked at his plate and smiled. “Hume toh aapki beti pasand hain. Now let them talk too after the lunch,” she dumped her choking and gulped the full glass of water.
She glanced at her parents with questioning eyes as they nodded their heads. “So, what is your answer?” Rudransh looked at her, who was zooming out.
“Didi, jiju kuch puch rahein hain,” her sister teased her but received a dangerous glare from Devika.
“Jaisa mummy papa ko theek lage,” she answered and ate her halwa. They all also start eating their lunch.
After the dinner, Devika and her sister put the utensils in the kitchen and sat with the guests. “Devika beta, Rudransh ko backyard me le jao,” her father said to her. “And murdered him,” her sister whispered in Devika's ear. She elbowed her and stood up.
He followed her to the backyard, they both sat in awkward silence “Toh kitne bacche hain aapke?” She blurted without thinking twice but slapped her mouth immediately.
“I am twenty seven years old, what about you?” She nodded with flustered cheeks “I am twenty four years old,” and answered him while plucking the couch pearls.
“Do you have any questions from me?” He asked in a passionate tone.
“Agar aap minister hain, toh aap sabse juth bolte honge na,” she again asked him without realisation and soon regretted it “I am sorry,”
"Devika naam hain aapka, aur main apni hone waali devi ke juth kyu bolunga,” his ears turned red as he rubbed his neck nervously.
“You will never force me right?” She looked into his eyes and expected to hear no but her chest flustered when he answered, maintaining eye contact.
“The day I will force you, it will be my last day in this world.”
